The Bavarians are in the market for defensive reinforcements following Javi Martinez's serious knee injury, which rules him out of action until at least the new year, and have been linked with a number of centre-backs in recent weeks.
Benatia supposedly tops their wish-list, though, and Hitzfeld has told Bayern to act now before it's too late.
"Benatia is the captain of Morocco's national team and he has a lot of quality," Hitzfeld told Sky90.
"In the end, it's all about whether he can help Bayern forward.
